MISSION PITTSBURGH: STOREHOUSE

Fighting Food Insecurity In Pittsburgh, One Storehouse At A Time

The Mission Co’s Storehouses connect resources to neighborhoods across the Pittsburgh Area, giving local leaders the tools to fight hunger and build healthier, stronger communities. Our Storehouse model ensures that food and essential supplies reach people who lack access to quality, healthy food.

WHY WE'RE FOCUSED ON FOOD ACCESS IN PITTSBURGH

The Reality of Food Insecurity

Pittsburgh is a city built on hard work—but for many families, putting food on the table isn’t easy. Rising costs and pockets of “food deserts” across the Greater Pittsburgh Area have left thousands of people making tough choices between paying bills vs buying groceries.

We’ve seen the gaps firsthand. Many existing programs are doing good work, but families often have to travel long distances for limited distributions—or miss them entirely due to scheduling conflicts. We knew there had to be a better way.

When we started listening to local leaders, we learned something powerful: the issue wasn’t just about food—it was about access. That led us to rethink how food gets where it’s needed most.

What Is A Storehouse?

A Better Way To Fight Hunger

“a building for storing provisions.” or “an abundant supply or source.”

Our Storehouse model was shaped by years of experience in disaster relief. Studies have shown that the most effective aid is distributed through local partners, the people who know their communities personally. Leaders who are present long after the crisis to provide follow-up and continued care.

However, we aren’t a food bank. Traditional food banks play a pivotal role, but they can’t always reach families who lack transportation or need flexible access. By placing resources directly in the hands of trusted community organizers, we ensure help gets where it’s needed most.

We stock our Storehouses with provisions for our partners, get those supplies to them, and empower them to distribute when it’s best for their communities. We firmly believe this is the most effective way to deliver healthy, high-quality food to the people who need it most.

How You Can Help End Food Insecurity In The Pittsburgh Area

A donation of $40 a month helps us purchase roughly 115 pounds of food, providing a consistent supply for our partners—from the Fort Pitt Tunnels to Beaver Falls.

By keeping our Storehouses stocked, we’re able to supply community partners nutrient-rich, accessible food for their neighborhoods. Every donation helps expand our reach, supporting more partners, serving more families, and building stronger, healthier communities.
